Ocean Driller II – Shipping Bypass Channel Investigation
J&S Drilling recently completed an offshore geotechnical investigation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The multi-week project was undertaken to assess subsea geological conditions to support geotechnical reporting for the dredging contractor engaged on a proposed shipping bypass channel. Working collaboratively with project consultants, marine service providers, and the client, J&S Drilling successfully executed the project safely, efficiently, and to a high technical standard.
The scope of work comprised of 14 PQ3 diamond core boreholes, including Standard Penetration Tests (SPTs) and push tube sampling within the subsea geology. The drilling and sampling methods provided geotechnical engineers with critical data to design a dredging plan for the proposed channel. Borehole locations extended across approximately seven nautical miles, with variable geological conditions encountered throughout the site. Despite challenging formations of unconsolidated sand and limestone, J&S Drilling’s experienced crew achieved exceptionally high core recovery rates — a key highlight recognised by all project stakeholders.
To deliver the program, J&S Drilling deployed its M6 Combi-Float jack-up barge, fitted with a drill rig, generators, power packs, fixed rod racks, and self-contained sea containers. The onboard sea containers housed a fully equipped kitchen and amenities, a service workshop, and dedicated workstations for consultants to log and store core samples. Each container is air-conditioned and fitted with power outlets and lighting to support continuous field operations and crew comfort.
An Edson 3000WB drill rig was utilised for the investigation. This highly versatile unit allows for rapid changeovers between drilling and sampling techniques, improving overall efficiency and reducing program costs.
J&S Drilling partnered with Jetwave Marine to tow and accurately position the 260-tonne jack-up barge at each geotechnical borehole location. Despite unfavourable sea conditions on occasions, the combined expertise and teamwork of the J&S Drilling and Jetwave Marine crews ensured precise positioning and seamless operations.
