Production and Monitoring Bores
J&S Drilling successfully delivered a production and monitoring bore program for a new Tier 1 client operating in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The project further demonstrates J&S Drilling’s capability to execute complex groundwater programs in remote and challenging environments, while maintaining strict compliance with safety, and client-specific requirements.
The scope of works comprised of drilling and installation of 6 production bores and 8 monitoring bores, with depths of up to 80 metres, targeting multiple aquifers in fractured rock. All works were required to be undertaken by Class 2 licensed drillers, in accordance with the Minimum Construction Standards for Water Bores in Australia (Edition 4) and industry best practice.
J&S Drilling mobilised experienced Class 2 licensed drillers, supported by qualified field personnel, to deliver the program safely and efficiently. Through effective planning, strong field leadership, and optimised drilling practices, the team completed the program ahead of schedule and under budget, while maintaining an incident-free safety record.
A key requirement of the project was the provision of dedicated, stand-alone supervision, with supervisors holding Section 26 (S26) statutory competencies. J&S Drilling assigned experienced personnel with S26 qualifications to oversee daily operations, ensuring compliance with site procedures, effective risk management, and clear communication between the client, hydrogeologists, and the drill team.
From a technical perspective, conventional down-the-hole (DTH) air hammer drilling techniques were selected as the primary method due to their effectiveness in penetrating the hard formations and identifying groundwater inflows. This method enabled accurate identification of:
- Aquifer zones
- Groundwater strikes
- Geological transitions
This information was critical in allowing project hydrogeologists to optimise bore design, including screen placement and construction methodology, ensuring long-term performance of both production and monitoring bores.
During the program, the team encountered extremely hard ground conditions, which had the potential to impact penetration rates and productivity. J&S Drilling mitigated these challenges through proactive planning and mobilisation of a comprehensive range of drill bits and downhole tooling, allowing the team to adapt to changing ground conditions without significant downtime.
The scope was delivered using a Fraste FS300 drill rig, mounted on an 8×4 carrier, providing the versatility and capacity required for both drilling and bore installation activities. The drilling operation was supported by a well configured fleet, including:
- Ingersoll Rand 400 psi / 1350 cfm air compressor, delivering consistent air supply for efficient DTH hammer performance
- 6×6 water truck to support drilling operations
- 4×4 support vehicle and light vehicle for personnel transfer and logistics
- Telehandler, utilised for the safe and efficient handling of consumables, casing, and downhole tooling
The inclusion of a telehandler significantly enhanced operational efficiency while reducing manual handling risks, contributing to the project’s strong safety performance.
Throughout the program, J&S Drilling maintained a strong focus on:

- Protection of aquifers and prevention of cross-contamination
- Compliance with the clients procedures and safety and health management system
